Founded on April 4, 1932,
the ANWC has a long tradition of embracing a diverse
group of professional women in journalism. Designated an historic
site by the National Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ),
the Club is frequently a gathering place for Washington's media
leaders, resident dignitaries, corporate pacesetters and distinguished
foreign visitors.
Membership today has expanded to include professional
communicators representing newspapers, radio and television, publishing
companies, independent authors, online publications, public relations
firms, corporations, academic institutions, and government. The
Club provides professional development workshops and seminars which
give members insight into the latest developments in the field.
One
of the nation's oldest press clubs, The American News Women's Club is
a national nonprofit 501(c)(3) offering educational and professional development
programs in support of women in the journalism and communications professions.
The annual ANWC "Helen Thomas Award" benefit gala awards annual scholarships
to journalism schools. In 2003, the organization was named an historic
site in journalism by the National Society of Professional Journalists
(SPJ).
