ANWC members will honor veteran CBS News journalist Bob Schieffer at the twelfth annual ANWC benefit gala on Wednesday, April 14 at the new Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Washington, D.C. The annual ANWC Helen Thomas Award for Excellence in Journalism and/or
Outstanding Public Service is a black-tie benefit fund raiser which
awards
scholarships to journalism schools. Universities which have
participated in
the scholarship program over the years are American University,
Gallaudet
University, University of Maryland, Howard University, George Mason
University, George Washington University, and the Medill School of
Journalism at Northwestern University."
This Year's Honoree
Since May 1991, Schieffer has been anchor and moderator of the CBS News Sunday public affairs broadcast Face the Nation. He is also CBS News’ chief Washington correspondent and has covered Washington for 31 years. He has been Congressional correspondent since 1989 and chief Washington correspondent since 1982. Schieffer began his journalism career in Texas and joined CBS News in 1969. He is one of the few correspondents ever to have covered all four major beats in the nation’s capital — the White House, the Pentagon, the State Department and Capitol Hill.
The recipient of numerous broadcast news awards for his professional achievements, including six Emmys, Schieffer is the author of This Just In: What I Couldn’t Tell You On TV. He was named Broadcaster of the Year by the National Press Foundation in 2002 and has been elected to the Broadcasting Hall of Fame.
