Seven women poets explore our world in ways both real and romantic. Their voices, their bodies, and their poems speak of harsh realities, personal celebrations, feminine curiosity, and love.
Don't miss these lively performances by some of D.C.'s hottest poets, who represent the brilliance of new generations and the critical thinking of established artists.
Poetry has long been a central part of the African-American experience, from an oral tradition that stretches back to Africa to the Harlem Renaissance to the Black Arts Movement, from blues to hip hop to slams. ANWC salutes this tradition.
Performers include poet, writer and slam champion JaHipster, who has published three books of poetry and a CD; poet and writer Carolyn Joyner, a staple on the D.C. poetry circuit who has won numerous awards and has performed internationally; poet Laini Mataka, who has published three collections of poetry, has recorded two records, and is widely anthologized; Michelle Sewell, a spoken word poet and the founder of Women’s Words, a monthly women’s mic night; and published poet Nina Simon.

Women Don't Ask: Negotiation and the Gender Divide
Women can be their own worst enemies when it comes to getting what they want. All too often, they accept what is offered to them instead of insisting on what they deserve. That goes for everything from asking for a higher salary to requesting a little help at home. Linda Babcock, an economics professor at Carnegie Mellon University, will visit the Club to discuss the book she co-authored on the subject titled "Women Don’t Ask."
